Tour of Fort Collins, Colorado

Today we're taking you on a Virtual Tour of the fantastic city of Fort Collins, Colorado!

An underrated spot in our opinion, Fort Collins is home to truly stunning outdoor spaces, a charming downtown, and great schools! Really excited to share this one with y'all!

Let's dive in!

Fort Collins Vibes

With its own identity and soul, Fort Collins really stands on its own in when compared to the likes of Denver, Boulder, and Colorado Springs. It is located in north-central Colorado about an hour north of Denver, Boulder, and the Denver International Airport and is surrounded by small towns and open space. It's the 4th largest city in the state and home to around 176,000 residents. Maybe obvious, but the city is bordered to the west by the Rocky Mountains and specifically the Horsetooth Mountains - a distinct rock formation that makes Fort Collins special. And to the south, you have Loveland, the rest is small towns and open space.

In the video, we started out in Old Town - a special spot with homes from the 1800's, great shops and restaurants, and generally a really cool vibe. It's charming and spreads wide and not up.

One very nice addition to all the pros of Fort Collins, is the great schools. Served primarily by the Poudre School District, it's rated an A and ranked the 10th Best School District in Colorado according to niche.com. It is also served by the Thompson School District which is rated a B*. There are four High Schools serving the city - Fossil Ridge, Fort Collins, Rocky Mountain, and Poudre High Schools - rated A, A, A, and A- respectively. There are around 9 Middle Schools serving the city ranging from A- to B*. For Elementary Schools, there are around 30 and range from A to C+*.

Home Price Statistics

At the time of writing this, the median single-family sale price comes in around $600k. Compared to the Denver metro median of around$700k, Fort Collins is generally considered a little more affordable with a diverse and beautiful housing stock. Currently on the market for single-family homes, prices range from as low as $175k and all the way up to $5.5m. That is a very significant range and will depend mostly on location. In terms of condos/townhomes, prices currently on the market range from $219k-$1.5m. Approximately 55% of residents own vs 45% rent.

Pros + Cons

  • Honestly, there are so many beautiful outdoor spaces and great access to them, it's unreal

  • Situated right along the Horsetooth Mountains and a lot of water elements

  • Excellent public schools along with Colorado State University

  • Cool, historic downtown with tons of great places to eat, drink, shop, and socialize

  • Tons of suburban amenities

  • Much more affordable than say Boulder or Denver

Cons

  • Other than Loveland and small towns, Fort Collins is fairly isolated

  • Your cultural events like sports, concerts, etc - will be in Denver

  • Because it's a standalone city, you will naturally have some areas that are nicer than others

  • No skyline to speak of, no real 'urban lifestyle' available

  • Lack of diversity, a bit vanilla

  • Population growth
